Purchased by William Pitt and cut as a brilliant cushion of 140.50 carats in 1717, it became a crown jewel. Stolen and then recovered in 1792, it adorned the hilt of Napoleon’s sword. During her exile, Marie-Louise took it to Austria, where it was returned by the Austrians. In 1940, the Regent was hidden under a slab in the Château de Chambord.
